Polishing is the process of rubbing a surface or using a chemical action to obtain a spectacular reflection. This process of polishing is carried on by a largely commercialised product called the Cerium Oxide. Cerium Oxide is a powdery substance. It bears a yellowish white colour that looks pale.
Due to its inert nature, Cerium Oxide has replaced several other chemicals that were traditionally used as polishing materials, namely iron oxide and zirconia.

Precautions to be taken while using Cerium Oxide
Cerium Oxide is the only compound that helps in dealing with the decolourization of mirrors. Over the years the mirrors tend to develop green spots. These spots are turned colourless with the help of Cerium Oxide Polishing Powder. Cerium Oxide powder along with water serves as a great dissolving agent and can effectively remove stain marks and scratches on the mirror.

Usage guide for cerium oxide polishing powder
- Cerium Oxide need to be moistened with water and turned into a paste. This paste is then to be applied on the affected areas and scratches.
- The desired consistency shall be achieved on sprinkling at regular intervals and continuous stirring.
- The consistency of the mixture of Cerium Oxide and water shall be close to being a paste. If the mixture is too runny, the desired results may not be achieved.
- The plastic or glass surface shall have to be thoroughly cleaned so as to not leave behind any impurities.
- After completing the former steps, the paste shall be poured onto the surface and kept at rest until the excess paste is collected in a tub.
- The affected area is then required to be kneaded.
